Sore and Red

Looking for a little advice for a friend.
My friend has told me that he is thinking of giving up riding because he gets red and sore in the crotch area while riding. He has been riding in jeans, and I told him to try breeches because I thought they may be more comfortable.
What do the men in here who actually ride wear in the saddle? Do you all get "saddle sores" from riding? Is there a special type of underwear or anything he should try? What have your experiences been?
Thanks for your input.

I have always used briefs with Boots & Breeches since I started riding about 30 years ago. Never had a problem. I did find athletic supporters too restricting for romantic riding.

This article by Jessica Jahiel has some helpful ideas:

Definitely, your friend would find breeches or jodhpurs more comfortable than jeans. For underwear, I ride in a dance belt as suggested in the linked article, which provides support but maybe too much for some.

Hello Jo-Ann and all
Well Flippin' Heck - a real riding issue :o)
I can heartily recommend the Equetech Men's Boxers, which give a lovely, firm but not too harsh amount of uplift, plus low on VPL and warm in winter. Not cheap but very good.
They do a similar pair of briefs, but I find the boxers much more snug and comfy :o)
Not sure quite in the world your friend is, but here's the manufacturer's web page:
http://www.equetech.com/underwear.htm
And I'm sure an email to them will reveal a local supplier.
Cheers
Mick

Thanks all for the info! I have passed it onto my friend and hope he finds it useful. I hate to see a man quit riding because he gets sore - so few men around here ride in the first place.
