I have to admit that I find the 80's bondage pictures extremely classy and a bit of a 'golden age' for equestrian bondage, but I can't put my finger on it as to exactly why?
Maybe it's that all the boots were leather and that the people in bondage look like they 'could' actually ride, rather than some blond bimbo with big tits which seems to be common these days (even here on rb.net)

I think that you just explained it completely. There's some pics of an equestrienne tied to the saddle and the stirrups. Just anyone without any experience can't do that.
