Actually got the idea from some pics we saw a few years ago from DDF site. Sorry dont know the url for it.. But, its short for the photographers name and have seen a number of photosets he has done over the years using a pair of modified jods with a crotch zip.

Is there some zigzag stitch around the edges of the hole?
Nice helmet too. I really like the chin strap.
